Rainwater Harvesting in San Antonio de Lomerio, Bolivia
The municipality of San Antonio de Lomerio in Bolivia is located on the Brazilian Precambrian Shield, an extremely thick slab of solid granite. As a result, water scarcity is a regular problem.
Deep wells are technically and economically problematic, and the groundwater reserves are insignificant and the shallow wells in the country disappear even in the beginning of the dry periods.
In 2001, due to an extended drought, the region of San Antonio and the entire Chiquitania zone were declared emergency zones. The same happened in 2004 and 2005.
Rainwater Harvesting was the solution which naturally suited best the local geographical and geological conditions.

According to a report issued by the Bulgarian Ministry of Environment and Water, over the last decade Bulgaria has seen a noticeable decrease in fresh water supplied by natural hydrological cycles.
For the period 1985 - 1995, run-off decreased by 40 %. This trend towards drought due to climate change, in combination with a lack of major reservoirs, the worn-out state of general water supply infrastructure and bad management have forced the government to formulate a programme for improving troubled drinking, domestic and irrigation water supplies.

Rainwater Harvesting in Stara Zagora region Bulgaria
At the beginning of 2003 IRHA and its Bulgarian partner, Earth Forever, formulated three projects for Bulgaria:
The IRHA thus planned to promote rainwater management for rural and urban areas and ecological sanitation for rural areas in Bulgaria. It included direct project implementation as well as awareness raising (the conference in Sofia) and training of users and local policy makers (training courses in Stara Zagora).
The introduction of these two components of the policy of Integrated Water Resource Management in Bulgaria should have a total cost less than € 110,000.
In 2004, the organization Women from Europe for a Common Future took the project in hand and, later, together with the Bulgarian partners the NGOs Earth for Ever and the Institute for Ecological Modernization, implemented it in Stara Zagora and Varna.
Unfortunately, the Rainwater Harvesting component, considered as "dangerous", was taken out from its programme. The IRHA didn't take part in the implementation process.
