Blue Schools in the region of the Himalayas, India



Objectives
This project aims to improve the living conditions for children and inhabitants of 10 villages of Himachal Pradesh. The priority is to provide access to water and adequate sanitation for 10 schools. Other elements are included in the program, such as education in environmental protection, in peace and tolerance and reforestation (with the program "a tree for each child"), all of them selected to facilitate the bringing up a new generation of environmentalists.

To reach these objectives, the IRHA proposes to introduce rainwater harvesting action adapted to the local conditions and thus to use this precious water resource in a more rational/sustainable way.

Localization
Schools in 10 villages in Himachal Pradesh (Himalayan region of India): Moginand, Vermapapari, Kollar, Galanaghat, Basahn, Dadahu, Jamta, Panjhar, Phagu and Andheri (Ludhiana).

Local partner
The Indian NGO "Pan Himalayan Grassroots Development Foundation".

Main Activities
1. Construction of a 30 cubic meters rainwater harvesting system in each school ;
2. Construction of improved latrines and dry ecological toilettes in each school ;
3. Education in Health and hygiene
4. Education in environmental protection ;
5. Education in peace, tolerance and gender equality;
6. Reforestation (plantation of 12'850 trees) ;
7. Initiation of solid waste management.

Duration
17 months.

Planning of the project
The works begin on 05.07.2008 and end on the 30.11.2009.

Direct beneficiaries
4'021 children and their families (more than 28'000 people), 261 teachers and the population of the 10 villages.
