Objectives

The objective of this project is to improve the studying and teaching conditions in two schools of Kahone municipality in Senegal. To reach this objective, it is proposed to improve water and sanitation access in the schools and consequently to improve the children’s and teachers’ health. It means to introduce efficient and low cost technologies that can be easily reproduced in neighbouring schools and villages. The idea is that children will diffuse what they have learnt at school in their families and villages: the goal is to create a new generation of environmentalists.

Location

The two schools of Kahone 1 and Fass Kahone are situated in the Kahone municipality, region of Kaolack, Senegal.

Context

In the schools of Senegal, water and sanitation infrastructures are still rare and not well managed. This situation can lead to the diffusion of contagious diseases such as cholera and paludism, making learning conditions extremely precarious, especially for girls who are more sensitive to hygiene conditions. The consequence of this is irregular school attendance that can sometimes end with abandon.

In the school of Kahone 1 there is just one tap for 635 children, and they don’t have any toilets. Fass Kahone has no water point but has four new toilets in very good state, however four toilets for 514 children is not enough.

Activities

• Creation of a PACT (Parents-Authorities-Children-Teachers) Committee in each school.

• Construction of a rainwater harvesting system with 50m³ reservoirs in each school.

• Construction of 16 toilets and 10 urinals for children and 4 toilets for teachers.

• Rehabilitation of a toilet and a shower cabin.

• Organization of training sessions for 29 teachers and members of the PACT Committees on hygiene, environmental protection, peace and tolerance. The teachers and the members of the PACT committees will then transfer this knowledge to the children and communities.

• Reforestation with the planting of 1,149 trees on public land and 150 trees on school land.^
