Bulgaria has seen a noticeable decrease in fresh water supplied by natural hydrological cycles.
For the period 1985 - 1995, run-off decreased by 40 %. This trend
towards drought due to climate change, in combination with a lack of
major reservoirs, the worn-out state of general water supply
infrastructure and bad management have forced the government to
formulate a programme for improving troubled drinking, domestic and
irrigation water supplies.

Rainwater Harvesting in the Stara Zagora region Bulgaria
At the beginning of 2003 IRHA and its Bulgarian partner, Earth Forever, formulated three projects for Bulgaria:
• RWH in Bilingual High School “Romain Rolland” in Stara Zagora
• RWH in Sulitsa, Stara Zagora District and a Workshop in Sofia
• Eco-sanitation - Dry Toilets in Sulitsa, Stara Zagora District, Bulgaria and a 5 day Training Course
IRHA thus planned to promote rainwater management for rural and urban
areas and ecological sanitation for rural areas in Bulgaria. It
included direct project implementation as well as awareness raising
(the conference in Sofia) and training of users and local policy makers
(training courses in Stara Zagora). The introduction of these two
components of the policy of Integrated Water Resource Management in
Bulgaria was to have a total cost less than € 110,000.
